The day after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Repent America issued a press release. In it, they implied that Hurricane Katrina was a judgement from God on New Orleans, particularly on Southern Decadence, New Orleans' annual queer end-of-summer bash.

Eh, they're just some tiny fringe group, right?

Well, Agape Press, the American Family Association's news service (and nobody can claim that the AFA isn't right in the heart of Christian activism) posted an article misleadingly titled New Orleans Residents: God's Mercy Evident in Katrina's Wake. They don't just imply.

The pastor explains that for years he has warned people that unless Christians in New Orleans took a strong stand against such things as local abortion clinics, the yearly Mardi Gras celebrations, and the annual event known as "Southern Decadence" -- an annual six-day "gay pride" event scheduled to be hosted by the city this week -- God's judgment would be felt.

“New Orleans now is abortion free. New Orleans now is Mardi Gras free. New Orleans now is free of Southern Decadence and the sodomites, the witchcraft workers, false religion -- it's free of all of those things now," Shanks says. "God simply, I believe, in His mercy purged all of that stuff out of there -- and now we're going to start over again."

Last I checked, this isn't what Christianity is about. I thought Christianity wasn't about exploiting human suffering.

Show me that it's not. Take a stand.

You know, I've read about shit like this, and it just makes me fucking sick, almost as sick as the Matthew Shepherd case. I'm so close to just publicly declaring my agnosticism (I'm out to everyone but my dad's side of the family, and I have a suspicion they're really only Christians because it's expected of them -- my dad is, anyway, and his family is just as hypocritical as he is). I know that these people do not reflect the majority of Christians -- I don't even consider them true Christians anyway -- but people like this make me wonder if it wouldn't be better if I just went on a killing spree to weed out the dumbasses from society.

I was raised a Christian, but fell out with it at a young age, so all I was really taught were the basic values - love everyone, be kind, etc etc. I never got ot the bit about gay-bashing (which I am immensely angry about) or how abortions are t3h evilz0rz or anything (did they even have abortions in the time of Missuh Jesus?).

But no killing sprees, my dear. That will get you locked up, even if you were doing good. We don't have such uber-Christians in England (we sent all of them to America on the Mayflower, I believe. For this I apologise), but over here, anyone with those kindds of views would be considered a Nazi. They'd be deported if they were from another country.

Also - hurricanes. I believe these lovely Nazi-Christians are forgetting how rare these are. In fact, the last time one as big as Katrina came along, it was probably before EVERYONE could write, or when the media wasn't everywhere recording it all. Ergo, they assume this is the first because it's the first they've heard of. This is not the Apocalypse. This is Nature getting pissed because of carbon emissions. Or something.

I know, I know. Killing is bad. But how else are we supposed to keep society from imploding? (And my head from exploding?)

It's not entirely your fault the Mayflower came here; I blame Nature for not spamping the damn ship, the Native Americans for not being suspicious enough to kill the damn bastards outright, and smallpox for not doing its damn job. >_>;

You don't know me, but this post hit me hard. I agree with some of what it has said. It seems as if some of the statements here reflect an incomplete view of God. I say that if he did judge them, it was for us to learn to care for the hopeless and the hurting. As far as Christians who are fake, I just want to encourage you to seek out those who are real. We exist. Try to think of Christs example or Holiness. We have the hardest time trying to follow this. And please, don't turn agnostic.

Re: On this post

Thank you for this previous comment. People need to know that the majority of christians are not gay bashing abortion clinic bombing pyschos. Do I think abortion is wrong? Yes. Do I thing homosexuality is wrong? Yes. But I am FOR SURE not someone who bashes them or tells them they are going to Hell. I approach christianity from a loving point of you. Yes I think these individuals(homosexuals,etc..) are doing wrong but I want to help them and show them the right thing to do in a loving way, not a hateful way. I sure dont know of any time when someone has willfully changed their ways of thinking because of hateful people throwing their sins in their faces. I can't count though the number of times I've seen people change through someone loving and respecting them, while all along letting them know how they feel about what they do. Their are good christians out there. Its just that the media tends to only cover the crazy ones because people want to see controversy on tv and that will sure bring it.
