Advice, please!

Okay, so I'm thinking of changing my hairstyle. For reference:

is what my hair (and I) look like now (please forgive the blurriness, I didn't have anyone around to take the pic for me).

is what my hair looked like between one and two years ago. I'm not sure if I like the hairstyle or not -- it was easy enough to take care of, but I'm not sure it really did me justice.

Now, I have nothing against short hair, except for the fact that it tends to emphasize my big head. Should I keep my current hairstyle, cut it like in the second picture, or cut it a different way altogether? And if you think I should try a different hairstyle, can you give a visual reference and a reason why? I'm also thinking of dying my hair. My primary choice is purple, but I might go with blue or green, or maybe black. Any suggestions?

EDIT: I should probably mention that I have a problem with hair falling in my face -- my hair's usually pulled back into a ponytail, unless I have a specific reason for leaving my hair down (or if I want to feel pretty, which is usually my only reason.)

I like the long hair, but don't know much about keeping it out of the face. Purple and blue are my favorites, but green would also look quite nice on you.
