Well, it seems that the problem with my computer is that my hard drive is failing most spectacularly, and it's going to have to be replaced. And of course, since it can never be just one thing going wrong, they can't seem to get any of the data stored on said hard drive to back it up, and it's quite possible they won't be able to before they replace it. Which means, of course, that all my music (all ten gigs of it), all my writing, all my favorites, all my drawings and saved pictures of cute fuzzy kittens, all of it is most likely gone. I'm pretty pissed right now, because I really should have backed up all my music, at least, to my external hard drive, like I've been planning to for a while now. That's the first thing I'm going to do when I start downloading more music. I guess I'll have to see if [livejournal.com profile] codenamelily still has a copy of my fanfic, or if it's still in my email somewhere, because I do want to rewrite it eventually. And I'm having WoW/laptop withdrawals, and that's not good. Grawr.

Also, I don't want to go to work today. Someone go in my place, please.

I can definitely check to see if I have a copy of it - I most likely do, if not on my computer then in my email somewhere. Do you remember the file name on it? I'll go check now to see if I can find it but if you have the name, it's more likely I'll find it.

I'm so super sorry that your computer is doing that. Mine had a major virus that wiped out all my stuff a few months ago, including a 10,000 word exchange fic that was due a week from when it happened that I hadn't backed up. I was so, so upset about it. So I totally feel your pain, my dear. -hugs-

Let me take a moment to profess my complete and undying love to you for getting that fic back to me. Thank you so, so, so much! The idea of losing that fic upsets me as much as the idea of losing all my music (though I just remembered I DO have some of the older files backed up on CDs, so they're not all gone). You just saved me a lot of rewriting and frustration. You're my hero. :3

=) No problem, my dear. I knew there was a reason why I keep copies of things sitting around here, other then that I'm just too lazy to go and clear everything out, lol!

It's good that you found some of your music, though. Hooray!

I almost lost everything recently, so I hope I remember to burn stuff off to CD/DVD more often after this. It's really expensive (I mean reaaaally) but you might want to keep the old HD and come tax time or something see about getting it looked at by a data recovery outfit. It'll run at least 400-500, and some of them run quite a bit higher, but it might be worth it depending on how much you lost.

That's a really good idea - I might ask my parents about it, seeing as how what little income I have is being saved for an overseas trip come spring semester. They might spring for that if I beg just the right way. Then again, seeing as how most of the stuff on my computer was pirated music, that might not be an entirely wise move on my part ... But thank you very much for the suggestion! I didn't know I could do that.

Yup, basically they pull then thing apart and read the individual plates bit by bit with specially designed drive readers.
